Design concept is to change the gas mower ate a lot today, into a much quieter and smaller “park cleaner”. This electric mower would be quiet, lightweight and cheap. Grip will fold down to make it even more compact and simple design would makes it easy to operate. Underwear maker Triumph Japan launched the Solar Power Bra show that solar panels can produce enough energy to charge your phone or iPod and can display small messages because it is wired to a mini electric bulletin board.  The bra padding can be used to store water and to drink it by using a straw that you insert into the brasserie cup. The Solar Power Bra requires solar panels to be worn around the abdomen to collect direct sunlight. Green-colored bra should not be washed or used in the rain. “Very comfortable and I can really feel involved in eco-friendly efforts as well,” model Yuko Ishida said. [Via]

Comparison between the Amorphous and Crystalline Silicon Solar Panels

Solar panels are generally made from crystalline or amorphous silicon. Amorphous means that the solar cells does not have a crystal structure. When you see a lot of solar panels, you will notice a mosaic pattern. This mosaic is different silicon crystals that grow together in different orientations.

Amorphous type silicon solar panel do not have a crystal structure. Amorphous silicon is as a glass or obsidian. The silicon atoms are all frozen together in a random way. However, in crystalline type silicon solar panels, the silicon forms a lattice or regular repeating crystal structure.

Excess crystalline type solar cells is that they are generally more efficient. However, the crystals need time to grow and therefore more expensive to produce.

Amorphous silicon panels cheaper to produce, because no crystal structure that needs time to form. However, the amorphous solar panel is less efficient.

Some solar panel manufacturers such as Sanyo has been producing solar panels that use a combination of amorphous and crystalline silicon for maximum effect. High efficiency crystalline silicon can be used to capture most of the energy, but the various layers of amorphous silicon is added to capture what is left.

So, what amorphous construction silicon panels? They are solar panels made from a non-crystalline variety of silicon.

Note: When purchasing crystalline or amorphous silicon panel it is important to consider the cost with efficiency. A crystalline silicon panel may be very efficient, but cost can be overcome benefits. Amorphous panel less efficient, but they are also cheaper. So, there is always a balance between costs and benefits.

Flat collectors, and even concentrator is a tool used to collect solar radiation energy so that thermal energy produced can be used in more practical for a variety of processes. Flat solar collector consists of a transparent cover, absorber and insulator. Solar radiation that falls on the surface of the transparent material in the short wave will be forwarded by transparent material and then absorbed by absorber. Black color have an ability to absorb a larger radiation so that most of the sun radiation will be absorbed. Absorption of this radiation will create a high temperature absorber. Heat radiation emanated by absorber but in the form of long waves. Most of the transparent material has an opaque nature of long wave radiation and therefore part of the long wave radiation reflected back by this transparent material to the absorber. Some radiation is absorbed will be reflected back and the rest will experience the same process that is part reflected back to the absorber. Thus, the loss of heat due to radiation can be minimized by flat collector. In addition, the transparent cover also functions as a heat loss barrier carried by the air above the absorber to the environment.

Heat from the absorber is used through heat exchanger to the media of heat carrier. Media of heat carrier commonly used can be air or water. When using water as the media, absorber will conduct heat to the surface of the outside pipes. Then take heat conduction from the outside surface to the inside surface. With the process of convection, heat will move from the inside surface to the water that flows in the pipes, so the water temperature will increase. Water with a high temperature and then used in the other parts of the outside collectors flat. A similar process occurs when air is used as a medium of heat, but in this case the pipe is rarely used. The air above (or below) the absorber heated through convection due to direct contact with the absorber. High temperature air is then flowed out of collectors than used in processes that require hot air.

The performance of a solar collector will depend on the absorptivity characteristics of the absorber, transmissivity of transparent material, overall heat transfer coefficient of the insulator, the transparent material and the absorber.

Absorptivity is the portion of light that is absorbed by an object; transmissivity is the portion of light that is forwarded by an object, while the overall heat transfer coefficient is a power of heat transfer or the opposite of heat resistant.
